On a related note, in March, Saudi Arabia announced plans to build a $ 5 billion green fuel plant at NEOM, powered entirely by solar and wind power, with the goal of becoming the world’s largest supplier of hydrogen by 2025, Bloomberg reported.

When Saudi Arabia hosted the G20 presidency, energy ministers endorsed a critical new approach to carbon management – the circular carbon economy – that broadly supports a sustainable future for the country. clean energy.

As an active contributor to the Kingdom’s energy industry over the past 80 years, GE is well positioned to help the Kingdom achieve its decarbonization goals. In October 2020, the US multinational conglomerate announced its intention to achieve zero net carbon emissions in its facilities and operations by 2030.

The company is proud of its innovative Advanced Gas Path (AGPT) technology, which holds two world efficiency records. The AGPT was installed on three 6B gas turbines at Saudi Cement’s factory in Hofuf, helping to improve efficiency by up to 3.3% per unit.

This technology can simultaneously increase efficiency, efficiency and uptime, while reducing fuel consumption and environmental impact.

“Converting simple cycle power plants to combined cycle – something that can be accomplished in as little as 16 months – can allow them to produce up to 50% more electricity using the same amount of fuel. This means less emissions per megawatt hour of electricity produced, ”Bahkali said.

Bahkali also aims to introduce GE’s 9HA high efficiency air-cooled gas turbine to the Saudi market. The technology is already in use in the United Arab Emirates; it was installed at the independent 1.8 Gw Hamriyah power station in Sharjah, which is expected to be the most efficient in the Middle East.

According to Bahkali, the technology can help the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 4 million tonnes per year, which is equivalent to taking 1 million cars off the roads of the UAE.

“As part of its comprehensive energy plan, Saudi Arabia also aims to have around 16 GW of wind power by 2030,” Bahkali said. “We are well positioned to help achieve this through GE’s Cypress onshore wind technology, digital solutions and long-term commitments to operational performance through our full service agreements.

GE’s Arabelle steam turbine can also support the Kingdom’s goal of having nuclear power plants, as 50% of the world’s nuclear power plants use GE’s steam turbine technology. This technology is capable of generating up to 1,750 MW of CO2-free energy from a single turbine, with proven reliability of 99.96%.

GE also has the greatest fleet experience in the use of low calorific alternative fuels, particularly hydrogen for power generation.

“Considering the large fleet of GE gas turbines installed in the Kingdom and the presence of our energy-focused Hot & Harsh R&D lab on the campus of the GE Manufacturing and Technology Center in Dammam, it is possible to start to work on pilot projects with local partners in Saudi Arabia.
